Car Donations for the Holidays
The holidays are quickly approaching and this is the time of year when people think about donating to charities. This year car donations have become a popular way for people to get rid of their old vehicles while still giving back. It is a win/win situation for the donor as well the charity. But before you donate your car to an organization, there are a few things you need to know.
Car Donation Tips:
- Only deal with reputable organizations. Check to make sure the charity is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) non-profit. When you deal with a 501(c)(3) organization, you are assured that 100% of your car donation goes to the charity and not to a 3rd party fundraising company.
- To claim the tax deduction, you must receive an IRS tax donation receipt from the organization. It usually takes between 10-15 business days to receive that receipt after your donation.
- Look for an organization that provides free towing for your vehicle. It takes the burden off of you and puts it on the organization. You just have to set up a convenient time for pick-up and the charity does the rest.
- Most car donation organizations accept running as well as non-running vehicles as long as you have a clear title without any liens.
Donating your car, truck, SUV or motorcycle can be a rewarding experience as long as you are armed with the information you need to make it a quick and easy process.
